General identification features
- Coloured in combinations of green, brown, yellow, and black. This exclude eye colour. This is the most common feature for this family.
- All species have very distinctive markings on lateral and dorsal thorax.
- Only Dragonfly with eyes widely separated rather than in contact.
- Most species have enlarged foliations on terminal abdominal segments
- Most species have flares segments at the last three segments of the abdomen called Clubs)
What is:
- Foliations
Flattened lateral, leaf-like extensions at the tip of the abdomen of some adult Clubtails (Gomphidae) and females of some other species
- Clubtail
Primarily found in Gomphids (Clubtails) Many Clubtail species (but not all) are adorned with three noticeably flared segments at the end of their abdomen that give them their name. A few non-Gomphids sport clubs too but normally small. The club is more prominent in males, and they will raise the end of the abdomen to display it.
